Fixing the YLOD

The Playstation 3′s Yellow Light Of Death is the equivalent of the Xbox 360′s Red Ring of Death and the results are the same; the consoles stop working. As you can imagine, the yellow light signifies a problem with the Playstation 3. Specifically, it states there is a general hardware failure and the console will no longer function correctly. However, like many problems that arise with the consoles, there are individuals and groups that have found many ways to circumvent this problem, should it arise due to a fault in the software, rather than actual hardware failure. Let’s look at the PS3 YLOD fix.

The Hard Drive

Some failures with the Playstation lies with the hard drive within. It can sometimes malfunction when installing a game, amongst other reasons. To deal with this, you need to have a little knowledge of removing the Playstation 3 hard drive and being able to format them. The end result of this fix will lead to a complete removal of all data on the hard drive, so be aware that your save games and downloaded items will no longer be present.

You’ll need a pendrive and a computer. Visit Sony’s official PS3 knowledge center and download the necessary software for your Playstation 3. It will ask for this at the end of the hard disk fix.

Start by removing the hard drive and connecting it to an available personal computer. Then you’ll need to do a quick format. To do this, right click on the ‘My Computer’ icon and select ‘Manage’. From the new window, select ‘Disk Management’ and look for the PS3 hard disk. Preferably, you would do a FAT32 format, which is an older one, but preferred. If that isn’t available, then simply do an NTFS quick format. Place it back into the PS3.

Boot up the PS3 and it will ask for the system software. Using your pendrive with the software on it, reinstall the software. Then fingers crossed this fixes your problem. As previously stated, only some failures are down to this, but it is a popular one.
